Omar Ashour (Guest)
Dr Omar Ashour is a Lecturer in Politics at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, University of Exeter (UK). He is a specialist on democratization, conflict resolution, international security studies, and Islamist movements. Regionally, Dr Ashour published about the Middle East (Egypt, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Turkey), the Caucasus (Chechnya), Central Asia (Tajikistan and Afghanistan) and Arab and Muslim Communities in the West. Dr Ashour wrote extensively on the subject of Islamist radicalization and de-radicalization programs and processes in the Middle East and Central Asia. He is the author of The Deradicalization of Jihadists: Transforming Armed Islamist Movements. New York, London: Routledge, 2009. Dr Ashour’s works appeared in the Middle East Journal, Perspectives on Terrorism, Studies in Conflict and Terrorism, Journal of Conflict Studies, Middle East Institute’s Policy Papers , Canadian Journal of Political Science, McGill Journal of Middle Eastern Studies, and other academic and policy journals. Dr Ashour’s current research is focused on comparative de-radicalization processes and programs in the Middle East, Central Asia and Europe and as well as comparative democratization.
